“Sure,” the man said, scratching the stubble on his neck. “The problem is that they’re all rented right now. We’ve got a few due back by 3pm, if you’re willing to wait around.”
Brendan checked his watch: 2:15. “So like forty-five minutes?”
“That would be the math, my man. But, ya know, most people don’t use the whole hour. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few people started coming in at 2:50.”
Brendan looked at his phone again and saw that it was still 2:15. Then he noticed something; “What about that kayak behind you?”
“You don’t want that one, man.”
“How come?”
“It’s haunted.”
“You have a haunted kayak?”
“Well, it might just be cursed.”
“What’s wrong with it?”
“Well, the last guy who took it out got a real bad charley horse, had to leave right away and found out his girlfriend was cheating on him every time he went kayaking.”
“That doesn’t sound like the kayak did anything.”
“Before that, a lady checked it out. Boat came by with a wake in the no-wake zone. She tipped over, got a mouthful of river water and was sick for weeks.”
“Again, it doesn’t sound like the kayak.”
“Before that, another guy took it out and that’s when Luke Perry died.”
“Are you for real?”
“Naw. This kayak just leaks. But, hey it’s already 2:16.”
