These Friends of Mine
We see a woman sitting in a red leather chair, her face blurred, her voice distorted.
Mindy: It started innocently enough. He would tell me these stories that happened to ‘friends’ of his. He had so many of these funny, little stories. At first, I didn’t think anything of it.
VO: Mindy’s story is not unique.
Mindy: Then I began to wonder: who are all these people? He never has friends over. He doesn’t go out drinking with the boys. I thought he must just have had a lot of friends at work.
VO: It could happen to anybody.
Mindy: But I knew that he was in his truck alone all day. He spent all of his time delivering packages to empty houses. Who were all these people?
VO: More cases are being documented every year.
Mindy: Then, these anecdotes and factoids about c-list celebrities would show up. He would tell me how the grandfather of the mom from ‘The Real O’Neals” has over three-hundred and fifty imdb credits, but that imdb isn’t a comprehensive list of his accomplishments.
VO: Nobody in Congress wants to do anything about it.
Mindy: I really began to get suspicious when he referred to one of these friends solely as ‘Jacob the Audio Guy.’ I guess a part of me knew then.
VO: Coming this fall-
Mindy: I married a podcast listener.
VO: Join us this month for the new 8-part series on NPR.
David: They are my friends. They follow me on Twitter!
